A major road maintenance contract will be issued for long term maintenance of the Tapo to Usino road in the Madang Province.
During a recent inspection of the Madang to Lae Highway, Works Secretary David Wereh said plans are in place for a major upgrade of a 141km road between Tapo hill and the Usino junction.
The contract will also be a bridging contract over current arrangements between the Australian Government’s Transport Service Improvement Program.
The Government has sought the assistance of the World Bank to fund the contract which will be announced later in the year.
Meanwhile small contracts have been awarded to local contractors to keep the highway in a passable condition.
Secretary Wereh said once the contract is awarded and works start, unstable areas of the highway especially in the Usino-Bundi pass will be properly rebuilt.
