The towns of Kokopo and Rabaul have seen a spike in armed robberies over the past two weeks, with Police now launching a thorough investigation into each of these instances.
So far two suspects have been arrested, with their accomplices still at large.
The most recent robbery occurred on Monday in Rabaul, when thugs robbed a female employee of a supermarket as she was transferring money to the bank.
The police are investigating the incident.
The provincial police commander Anthony Wagambie Jnr has made a special plea to the East New Britain public to supply information that will lead to the arrests of the criminals.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, two suspects were nabbed by Police in various locations in the province.
Police couldn’t confirm their involvement in this string of robberies, but said an investigation is underway.
Police believed the continuous robberies were committed by a well-organised gang operating somewhere from within Kokopo town.
Meanwhile, local Police have also raised concerns over the establishment of new illegal settlemen’s around Kokopo town.
Whether this is linked to the recent robberies is unknow, but Police have reiterated that those harbouring criminals will also be arrested and charged.
