Commander of the NCD Dog Unit, Leuth Nidung said they need new dogs in order to recruit new police officers to become dog handlers.
Currently, they are not recruiting any new handlers due to no new German Shepherd or Labrador bred dogs.
Commander Nidung explains that one dog is assigned per handler and in order to recruit new officers, they need new dogs. The pups are purchased in Australia for about K20,000 each and are trained in Bomana for up to six months to meet world standards.
The police department is recruiting in numbers to meet the government’s strategic aim of 10,000 new officers by 2018. Training time has been dropped from six to only four months to meet this demand. However, the new officers passing out from Bomana Police College will not join the dog unit handlers until new pups are imported.
Other than this, the dog’s kennels in Bomana are not in good condition. Sharp, broken wire cages display the risky living conditions. The dog’s lockup area and staff offices need urgent renovation.
The police department alone receives the biggest slice of the national budget under the law and justice sector.
However, the challenge is on the police department and the government to address rundown infrastructure and import new dogs for the unit.
