National Athletics Begin

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV Sports, Lae

The National Athletics Championships is on again, this time attracting more teams than previous events.

Secretary General for Athletics PNG, Philip Rehder, says the PNG Athletics Union continues to seek more support from the local business community to boost more events.

Up to 20 provincial teams and local clubs are taking part in this year’s championships.

Up to 11 provincial teams have arrived to participate in another national sporting event at Lae’s Ignatius Kilage Stadium.

The 55th National Athletics Championships is being held in Lae for the next three days.

Secretary General Philip Rehder says Athletics PNG is looking at adding a few more athletes selected from this national championship for the Melanesian Championships in Fiji next month.

Events for today began in the afternoon with the 800-metre races for all registered teams.

Toea Wisil is the highlight of the championships as she continues to prepare for her spot in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

The sporting event also provides an avenue of opportunity for athletes to showcase local sporting talents for other upcoming national sports events.
