Manus MP Calls for Return of Wilson Security Suspects

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Manus MP Ronnie Knight is calling on the Australian government to repatriate the three Wilson Security officers who face allegations of raping a local employee at the Manus Regional Processing Centre.

Knight’said if the three suspects deny the charges, they must explain this to authorities in PNG. He says the alleged crime committed is serious and PNG Police has all the right to further investigate the matter.

Knight expressed that authorities must make efforts in bringing back the three Wilson Guards to be prosecuted under PNG law.

“I call on the Australian Government to send them back,” Knight’said.

He condemned the actions by the Wilson Security officers and the process authorities took in sending the suspects back to Australia.

Knight’said the whole set up of the Manus Regional Processing Centre is of no benefit to the local people, with conditions in the province remaining in a decrepit state.

President of Catholic Professionals Society of PNG, Paul Harricknen, called for the closure of the centre. Harricknen said the government must reconsider its decision on partnering with the Australian government.

Harricknen added that if Australian personnel can bypass PNG laws and walk away freely, it sets a dangerous precedent in regards to crimes committed on PNG soil.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill also made similar calls to allow for investigations. He said an internal investigation will be carried out to get hold of those responsible for sending the three suspects back to Australia.
