The old Voco Point waterfront area in Lae will undergo major reconstruction work, this year, to bring back the old boat stop that vessels and travellers used in the past.
Saturday marked the official ground breaking ceremony for reconstruction work.
The boat stop is especially important to coastal Morobe villagers on passenger vessels, from as far as Siassi and Finschaffen.
The government has directed the National Fisheries Authority to carry out the rehabilitation project to improve berthing sites for all vessels.
The National Fisheries Authority, through survey studies carried out by Engco Limited Engineering, found that over 46,000 cubic metres of sand sediments will need to be dredged to make way for boats and small ships coming from Morobe’s coast and outer islands.
Over the last 10 years, sand deposits have accumulated and have formed a landmass.
The National Fisheries Authority initiated the plan and the China Harbour Engineering Company, the contractor currently building the Lae Tidal Basin, has won the bid to dredge this piece of land.
