Lae Police Investigators looking into the identification of a man’s body found floating outside of Lae’s Voco-Point wharf have confirmed that face recognition is impossible.
The decomposing body of the man was found floating in the sea outside the wharf and after was dragged into the old Lae Yacht Club jetty.
Detective Sergeant, Max Makeso, says the only means of identifying the man were a necklace and a maroon t-shirt found on the body, Monday morning.
“We can only identify the body if relatives come to the Angau morgue and identify the body,” says Detective Sergeant Makeso.
Lae Police are calling for any relatives missing a family member at sea to come forward and identify the t-shirt and the necklace.
Detective Sergent, Max Makeso, says they have leads from as far as the Milne Bay Province and also the Madang Province, where a dingy went missing at sea between long island and the coast of Madang town.
Lae Police Forensic Specialist, Detective Senior Sergeant, Allan Loloea, says the items are the only way to identify the body.
The decaying body of the man brings to attention the limited DNA testing laboratories needed by the Police to carry out investigations into mysterious deaths.
