Kutubu Police Hopeful

By Bridgette Komatep – EM TV,  Port Moresby

Law and Order problems in Kutubu, and the rest of Southern Highlands Province, have been reduced to a manageable level.

However, there are still reports of alcohol-related incidents and sexual offences, despite the alcohol ban in place.

Efforts by police to reduce crime, is a challenge, as housing remains a big problem for police officers at Pimaga Station in Southern Highlands Province.

Pimaga government station is one of the oldest government stations in resource-rich Kutubu, that houses police officers, however, most of the houses that were built in the early 1970s have since deteriorated. The officers perform their duties despite living in harsh conditions.

While police have managed to reduce crime in this part of Southern Highlands Province, housing for police at Pimaga remains a big problem, staff continue to live in run-down houses.

With no maintenance for decades, police officers have used their money to renovate their houses. But some good news for the staff, Provincial Police Commander Sibron Papoto in an interview, said he has given a submission for increased staff housing.

It may take months, or perhaps years to build more police houses, but one thing is for sure, PPC Papoto confirmed that more policemen will be deployed into the area, something which they are forced to do, because of the law and order situation.
