The Government of Japan has once again stepped in to support the Papua New Guinea Government in infrastructure development. Yesterday, Japanese Ambassador to PNG, Satoshi Nakajima, signed an exchange of notes with PNG Foreign Affairs Minister, Soroi Eoe, for a grant of over eight million kina.
This economic cooperation is for the provision of construction and disaster response equipment by the Government of Japan, which includes bulldozers and excavators, among others.
Japanese Ambassador to PNG, Satoshi Nakajima, said natural disasters have devastated many road networks in the country.
“Both PNG and Japan are prone to natural disasters.” The Ambasador said.
“Japan’s assistance is part of the efforts to help PNG to strengthen its capacity to prepare for and respond to natural disasters, and to build infrastructure for economic development,” he added.
The Japanese Government has also donated similar equipment earlier, which has been fully utilised by the Works Department and the ambassador is confident that the newly provided equipment will also be utilised to its maximum effect.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Soroi Eoe, thanked the Japanese Government for their support, stating that this will go a long way in supporting infrastructure development and economic growth in the country.
With this agreement, Japan will continue to provide technical support for another three years to maximise the effect of the equipment.
