First Official HIV ‘Do-It-Yourself’ Home Test Kit On Sale In UK

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

According to World Health Organisation, approximately 35 million people around the world were living with HIV/AIDS virus in 2003 and today, the number is still increasing.

A UNAIDS report has shown that from these 35 million, 19 million are living with the virus but do not know their HIV status.

While this becomes an individual fight with help from concerned organisations and health agencies, many still remain silent and tend to ignore to seek proper health services to know their HIV status. To make testing easier, a new HIV test kit is now available online.

The new “do-it-yourself” test kit for HIV is legally approved and is now on sale online in England, Scotland and Wales. The test kit was made by company Bio Sure UK.

The test kit allows the people to do the test at home and even see the results within 15 minutes. It is like the pregnancy test kit allowing women to define their pregnancy status.

Like pregnancy test kit, small droplet of blood taken from the fingertips is added to the device, and once two purple lines appear, it means the result is positive. The company recommends that once a person finds this result, should go for further medical check-up and blood test to confirm the status.

The kit is now available online in UK and hopes to encourage those reluctant people who ignore and do not consult appropriate agencies to confirm their HIV statuses.
