CEO of the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL), Bob Cutmore, said that plans are in place to improve the standard of Rugby League in the country.
Cutmore, who was recently appointed to head the country’s leading sport, has said drastic changes are needed to grow the code to new and improved standards.
While rugby league continues to bee seen as the biggest sport in the country, the sport that many consider to be the national code, Cutmore has been brutal in his assessment of the code’s current direction and has said the time has come for changes.
The SP PNG Hunters have long been seen as the pinnacle of league’s development platform, and with the prospect of the World Cup coning to PNG in 2017, there will be more emphasis on both player pathways, and a playing base that will also see far more players given the opportunity to play for PNGs premier club side.
And while there was widespread disappointment in the Hunters failure to qualify for the grand final, Cutmore said it is only a matter of time before the Hunters prove critics wrong.
The biggest issue facing the PNGRFL however is management; especially at the district levels.
This is something that Cutmore has said he will be working on to improve, with a review of the current structures in place, aimed at delivering the best quality to all stakeholders in the games, and to the nation as a whole.
