Cost Biggest Challenge to Digital Transition

The high cost of transitioning from analogue to digital for broadcasters remains the biggest challenge for the Pacific.

This is according to Andrew King, an expert consultant on broadcasting, when speaking during the opening session of day two of the ABU Pacific Media Partnership Conference in Port Moresby this morning.

He says the high cost faced by broadcasters remains the biggest hurdle in their moves to transition to digital broadcasting.

“If we can overcome the cost hurdle, it [the transition to digital broadcasting] would be easy,” King said.

In addition, King said the fear between free-to-air broadcasters versus pay-TV service provides another challenge.

“There is a place for both, but this has to be worked out carefully – this is where the role of regulators become important,” he added.

The presentations from this morning’s session provide an insight into what broadcasters within the region can expect when they commence their own transitions into digital broadcasting.
