French Ambassador Pascal Maubert wants PNG to protect its Coffee brands.
Ambassador Maubert said Papua New Guinea should be aware of copyright and branding measures used by agricultural commodities to protect certain products.
The Ambassador stressed that it was necessary to promote organic coffee production amid the current market trends.
He stated that EU funded projects will focus on support for rural development and the private sector.
Through the recent meeting with the Ambassador, it has prompted CIC to do an assessment on work done to date through the French government’s assistance, and to revive that partnership.
Ambassador Maubert made these statements following his visit to the Coffee Industry Corporation Headquarters in Goroka this week.
CIC’s partnership with the France government dates back to 1986 when there was the outbreak of coffee leaf rust and assistance was received to address this issue through this partnership.
France already had the expertise and organisations that specialised on tropical agriculture, it became handy for PNG as it needed assurance and guidance during a time of misperception about the coffee leaf rust.
