Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Besil, has asked relevant bodies to start auditing costs incurred for infrastructure projects such as bridges.
He said this while inspecting an eighteen-meter bridge being built by a Chinese company at a cost of five hundred thousand kina.
The Wau-Belolo MP’says proper measures have to be taken before funding infrastructure such as bridges. He said this while inspecting an 18 meter bridge in Patep yesterday.
Mr. Besil says some bridges inthe Highlands likethe Wasa Beidge in Kandep have cost millions for their construction, with money still being spent.
“Some ofthese bridges are K10 million, some are K15 million, the Wasa bridge of Kandep… will cost K40 million,” he said.
The inflated cost of infrastructure aroundthe country isthe result of scoping done by Engineers and ther parties involved.
Sam Besil again draws attention tothe EngineeringInstitute oPNG who are tasked to carry out technical audits.
“The cost of infrastructure meansthe EngineeringInstitute or Engineering club should look into costing because some ofthe figures employed by Ministersfor their electorate is just way too much,” he said.
About three months agothe EngineeringInstitute oPNG had staged a workshop in Lae for technical audit techniques andthey said technical audits were never done inthe past.
The workshop will hopefully putthe relevant bodies in a position to reducethe amount of money being spent on road and bridge constructions.
