Remote Secondary School Starts Academic Year

As the school year begins, Teachers at a remote secondary school outside Lae have taken steps to improve student results and the functions of the school this year.

Wau’s Grace Memorial Teachers launched a booklet to help them achieve better results for students and the school.

It comes in the midst of previous administration’s failure to submit acquittals’ for several years and on-going water shortages in Wau.

The school was one the first high schools established in the country; built in a mining town.

In recent education reforms it upgraded to a Secondary School. But, accountability has been a real issue, since the change.

Beremu Sesiguoc is a senior teacher who has taught at the school for the last 15 years, in a career spanning over 30 years.

“We had previous school’s administration that failed to submit acquittals,” he says.

In a handbook written by the teachers and given to a new principal, are policies for improving teaching, accountability and student results.

While improvements happen within the schools’ operations, Wau’s water problem continues to be a problem for the school this year.

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil, speaking yesterday at the launching of the academic year, urged the schools admin to provide the district with outstanding acquittals’ for several years.

He also announced that Bulolo Technical School would take more children from the districts when it becomes a Technical College next year and scholarships for overseas pilot training for top students.

As the world moves into the 21st century, Bulolo and Wau have tapped into the link beyond its valleys. Bulolo Technical School now has internet access.

The idea to add-value to human development, in technological and communication advancement is the key element, even with the challenges of district funds not being released on time.
