Catholic Church Launches Child Protection Policy

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Complementing the National Government’s Lukautim Pikinini Act which will be reviewed in Parliament, the Catholic Church of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands launched its first Child Protection Policy this morning.

The policy was developed to create more responsibilities amongst the different parishes of the Catholic Church when dealing with youths and young children.

It was also created to make more awareness on child protection and the various forms of child abuse.

Moreover, the policy will provide standards to establish a safe environment for children.

Policy co-author, Paul Harricknen said the policy is a working framework for other organisations within the Catholic Church to start their own policies regarding child welfare and protection.

Meanwhile, minister responsible for Child Welfare, Delilah Gore said the national government continues to acknowledge its partnership with church’s in the country. The Minister urged other church’s to come up with their own initiatives on child welfare and other social needs.
