Lae PNG Ports Workers Want Benefits

by Colleen Barilae- Emtv Lae

The Lae PNG Ports Corporation is currently facing industrial action over a delay in worker entitlemen’s.

The PNG Maritime Transport and Workers Union are representing the employees after complaints were raised over payment of entitlemen’s claimed to have not been addressed since 2011.

The five percent increase in paymen’s of PNG Ports workers was made in 2011 to all port workers in the country.

PNG Maritime Transport and Workers Union President, Philip Mavien, says some employees have not seen that change take effect for over four years now.

He says Tuesday’s silent protest of the Lae Port by workers walking off their jobs at 1pm was an attempt to raise awareness and to encourage management to address their entitlement issues.

The union president says a strike will roll out if they do not get a favourable response from their management.

Following this issue, Morobe Governor Kelly Naru has also raised concerns on the actions taken by a few PNG Ports employees in Lae, which may affect the overall operations of services.

The union says they will continue to fight for their members’ benefits and are calling for responsible parties to act upon their case to avoid inconveniences to other stakeholders.
