UNHCR Appeals to Australian Government to Take Urgent Action for All Refugees

By Jack Lapauve Jnr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is appealing to the Australian Government to take urgent action and evacuate refugees and asylum-seekers in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

In a statement released, UNHCR says there is an immediate and critical risk if this action is still not taken.

According to the refugee agency, the evacuation of refugees and asylum-seekers from Papua New Guinea and Nauru to Australia does not require legislative change.

This follows an increase in deaths, abuse, and their deteriorating health.

There are 650 asylum seekers currently held in Papua New Guinea by Government authorities.
