Trawen: Writs for LLG Elections Ready for Signing

The Electoral Commission has announcedthe elections of three different levels of representatives.

 

They are for the Local-Level Governments,the Motu-Koita Assembly andthe Angoram by-election. Betthere are concerns over smooth flow and security issues following threats from unpaid workers inthe last elections.

At a media conference held today in Port Moresby, Commissioner Trawen said writs for the LLG elections and Motu-Koita Assembly elections are ready to be signed tomorrow byInter-government relations minister Leo Dion. Writs for the Angoram by-elections are also ready to be signed and issued bythe Governor General.

 

Mr. Trawen has appealed to service providers from last year’s national elections not to disruptthe upcoming LLG elections. He saidthere are outstanding claims totaling K12.8m. Only last week,the Finance Secretary approverd K2.2m for outstanding allowances for returning officers andtheir assistants.

 

Trawen saidthe government needs to give urgent attention tothe Commissions' financial issues. The Commissions' LLG elections budget of K80m was reduced to K50m, an amount Trawen said is insufficient to carry outthe elections successfully.
