Surrendered firearms in Hela to be destroyed

The illegal firearms that were surrendered in Hela province, during the Klinim Hela Joint Forces Operation, will be disposed today, Tuesday 07 March 2017.

Police Commissioner, Gari Baki and representatives from the PNG Defence Force and United Nations are expected to be present, for the destruction of these weapons.

The operation cost the government K11 million. It began in January this year, with over 200 Police and Defence Force personnel deployed to Hela.

Most of the police personnel are from the Port Moresby Mobile Squad like the Defence Force are from the First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment at Taurama, and the Engineering Battalion at Lae’s Igam Barracks.

Over 300 guns, both factory and homemade firearms were surrendered since.

This is by far one of the biggest gun-surrendering events in PNG history.

The Hela Call-Out came following an increase in law and order issues in the province.
