The National Executive Council has approved a 5-day mourning period for the late Sir Mekere Morauta.
Prime Minister James Marape in a statement wrote that the government is working on the details and will be released soon after consultation with the family.
He said in the meantime, the country’s flag will still be flying low, as a solemn respect for the Statesman.
Ministers Justin Thachenko and Soroe Eoi have been tasked to coordinate the State Funeral proceedings with assistance from the Prime Minister himself.
Marape said because he passed on away in Brisbane under his family’s watch , what happened in Brisbane was a family occasion but State will pick up from there for a national bereavement, memorial and burial program.
“Sir Mek, the nation owes you this respect and to the family, whilst he is yours, he is more so a National Icon hence he will be accorded that highest respect in funeral by the State on behalf of his country,” stated the Prime Minister.
In the meantime, the nation will be informed of the developments in the coming days.
