Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has urged politicians and leaders in New Ireland Province to work together with their Governor to make autonomy work in the province.
He said this when signing the powers for Service Delivery Agreement with New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan on Tanga Island on Wednesday.
According to the Prime Minister, this marks a historic day for the province by allowing the people to manage their own affairs and communities.
He said that the government is not trying to replace the provincial government systems, but empower the provincial government systems for full autonomy for the people.
The government will try its best to empower three different provinces and aims to achieve that within seven years, to cover all 22 provinces by the country’s 50th Independence anniversary.
New Ireland Province is among two other provinces who received provincial autonomy this year.
