PNG-US Bilateral relations at the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Rimbink Pato, held bilateral discussions with Matt Mathews, the US Assistant Deputy Secretary of State for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

The bilateral was held this week on the margins of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mr Mathews said Papua New Guinea will need to set up programs, including a matrix of implementation though which funding can be sought to address issues of ocean management, including illegal fishing.

On APEC 2018 preparations, Minister Pato said the Government is mindful of the fall in commodity prices, and will take appropriate budgetary measures to ensure preparations are not affected.

Matthews assured that the United States of America is ready to support where necessary upon request. The US Government will also play a supportive role to the Australians as the lead country assisting PNG in the coordination of security.
