PNG Business Coalition

Professional women in Papua New Guinea, now have an avenue to discuss issues they face in the professional world.

Thanks to the union called New Business Coalition for Women, which was established recently.

Created with the support of the Australian Government and the International Finance Corporation, the union aims to drive economic growth and reduce poverty, by creating equal opportunities for women.

Since the turn of the 21st century, more women and girls across Papua New Guinea are entering into the once male dominated fields like engineering and trucking businesses.

The union is the first association for professional women in the Pacific.

Association goals include;

  • Promoting better workplace policies and practices;
  • Create opportunities in supply chains for women owned small businesses;
  • Reduce gender-based violence and harassment; and
  • Encourage more women to progress to leadership positions in business.
The coalition has a board consisting of 9 leading members in the PNG’s business committee.

Lesieli Taviri, is the Coalition Chairperson and the General Manager of Origin Energy PNG Limited.

The other board members also hold senior positions with business houses such as Exxon Mobile, Steamships Trading, and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce.

The main challenge the union is expected to face, is the kind of support the women will receive from their husbands.

With the influence of the western world, women in PNG receive more attention from international organizations. However, in our Melanesian culture, men still hold the highest respect in society.
