Pato: State Agencies to Address Influx of Foreigners in PNG

Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato, says there is a need to monitor the influx of foreigners working in the country.

Minister Pato says the state agencies will work together to address this issue.

Pato made these statements following a series of questions from Nuku MP Joe Sungi, in parliament today.

Nuku MP Joe Sungi aired his view that over the past five years there has been an influx of foreign nationals employed in rural areas of the country.

Questioning Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato, MP Sungi queried if the process of screening all working visas and citizenship was still intact.

The Nuku MP believes that the rate of foreign employment in small trading stores is widespread, and says it is adding to the growth of unemployment in Papua New Guinea.

The Foreign Affairs Minister identified the lack of consistent monitoring by state agencies.

Minister Pato says the police, labour department, defence and customs will be called in to review its policies, and address this concern.
