Pacific island ministers attending the eighth Pacific Water Conference have all agreed to push the agenda of water sustainability in the Pacific.
Yesterday, they signed a ministerial declaration on water development at the closing of the conference.
They will push the water agenda through the Pacific Islands Forum.
Water PNG CEO, Raka Taviri Jnr, says the exchange of ideas in sessions on water technology, asset management, sustainable water, and non-revenue water will see changes in how water utilities operate.
“The discussions will now see many operational ways change and objectives of providing sustainable clean water for our people,” Taviri said.
It’s a big achievement for the Pacific Water and Wastes Association, who have been struggling to make Pacific governments realise the threat of water scarcity in the region.
“The ministers have signed and agreed to bring the agenda forward and it’s a big step for Pacific Water and Waste Association,” said Latu Kupa.
This year’s event is the first to involve government ministers in the Pacific.
Vanuatu will host the ninth Pacific Water and Waste Management conference next year in Port Vila.
