Newcrest Mining Completes Education Improvement Projects

As part of Lihir Gold Mine’s Tax Credit Schemeommitments, Newcrest Mining recently completed education improverment projects inthe New Ireland Province.

The refurbishments at Saint Jude High School cost K700 thousand, while atthe Namatanai Secondary School K2.7 million was spent refurbishing dormitories, ablution facilities, staff houses andthe headmaster’s house. 

 

At Utu High School, K700 thousand was spent constructing and refurbishing ablution blocks and teachers’ houses.

 

Newcrest’s Country Manager and Chairman of Lihir Gold Limited, Peter Aitsi, saidthese projects are part of a collaborative approach developed betweenthe New Ireland Provincial government and Newcrestoto ensurethey align with local development priorities.    

 

Newcrest which acquired Lihir Operation in 2012 has full ownership under a court-approverd scheme of arrangement afterthe merger between itself and LGL.

 

The company has reportedly made substantial contributions tothPNG economy andthe surrounding communities through taxes and royalties paid to local, provincial, and national governments, investments into public infrastructure and services, awarding landowner contracts among thers.
