After months of controversy that drew the attention of the Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, construction has resumed on roads in the Lae CBD.
Cameron Constructions, one of the contractors that pulled out citing a nonpayment of bills has redeployed its workers to the unfinished road portions that will, hopefully, be filled with concrete by the end of the month.
But while work on the roads has resumed, officers in the finance department who were responsible for the misuse of funds as per an investigation report, remain in their positions, despite recommendations for strong disciplinary actions.
Last week, the Prime Minister told EMTV, cabinet had already adopted recommendations of the investigation led by the Chief Secretary, Manasupe Zurenoc, and that those responsible have been referred to the police fraud squad and Taskforce Sweep.
Among other irregularities, more than K3 million was paid out to a contractor who never completed another section of the Lae roads.
