Heavy Rain and Flood Warning Advice for Public

Heavy rain and flood warning advice issued by Port Moresby National Weather Service Forecasting and Warning Centre at 2.00 pm 16/12/2016, for northern PNG/Indonesian border to Vanimo to Wewak to Madang and Manus.

SYNOPTIC SITUATION AT 1:00 PM 16/12/2016

A confluent asymptote extends from northern PNG/Indonesian border to Bougainville on which, a well-defined convergence of cross-equatorial northwest winds created the uplift mechanism for the moist northwest maritime-tropical (mt) air mass to rise and precipitate.

The uplift mechanism is also enhanced by the accelerated air mass (or strong winds) induced by the convergence of cross-equatorial northwest winds.

North of the confluent asymptote is a trough with northwest-southeast orientation and south of the confluent asymptote is the monsoon trough which lies over southern region to Milne Bay to southern Solomon Sea and extending further south-eastward.

WARNING:
Heavy rains are forecasted to occur over the area mentioned within the next 12/24 hours and may cause heavy flooding and possible landslides.

NOTE:
All affected communities are asked to take necessary precautions.
