Strong wind warning

Initial strong wind warning issued by PNG National Weather Service valid from 11:00 am Friday, December 16, 2016 for all coastal waters of northern PNG/Indonesian border to Vanimo to Aitape to Wewak and extending to Manus.

SYNOPTIC SITUATION AT 10:00 AM, Friday, December 16, 2016.
The convergence of cross-equatorial northwest winds resulted in accelerated air mass over the areas under strong wind warning.

This accelerated air mass is located along a confluent asymptote which define the confluence region of moist northwest and dry southeast winds.

Having northwest-southeast orientation, the confluent asymptote extends from northern PNG/Indonesian border to Bougainville.

South of the confluent asymptote is a trough with northwest-southeast orientation lying over mainland PNG to Milne Bay to southern Solomon Sea and extending further southeasward.

 

WARNING:
Strong northwest winds of 20/34 knots with gusts are expected to continue for the next 18 hours causing rough seas and high wind waves.

 

NOTE: All small crafts and boats are advised to take necessary precautions before going out to sea.
