Ganim Previews Report Adressing Teachers’ Issues

By Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

Teachers’ leave entitlements will be high on the agenda when parliament meets tomorrow.

Confirming this today was Chairman of the Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education and Member for Wabag, Robert Ganim.

The report contains recommendations to address ongoing issues faced by teachers nationwide.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Robert Ganim says the report is yet to be presented to him by the Working Committee but from what he has seen, he was impressed with the outcome.

Mr Ganim says the committee came up with 13 recommendations that call for immediate review into the functions of the employer of teachers, the Teaching Service Commission and the Education Department which is responsible for teachers’ salaries.

Some recommendations put forward by the Parliamentary Referral Committee include the need to review and define teachers’ salaries, allowances and entitlements.

Mr Ganim says once the Working Committee, headed by Chairman Bari Sori, presents the report he then will present it on the floor of parliament this week.

It is also anticipated that the Minister for Education Nick Kuman will be presenting an Information Paper on teachers’ leave entitlements in parliament too.
