National Education Minister, Nick Kuman, said English will be made compulsory right across all grades.
Mr Kuman made these remarks in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province during the Goroka Grammar School Graduation last Thursday.
“This was part of a decision by the National Government and is to improve the standard of education in Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Part of the processes, is the National Government’s approach take to improve the entire curriculum, tailored to better suit Papua New Guineans.
M Kuman said that one of the changes is to introduce English language and make it compulsory across all grades, beginning with elementary schools.
“We are putting a stop to vernacular in elementary school. Children are speaking tok pisin and local language and end up not understanding English.
“This is not a way to prepare students from elementary to enter grade three,” he said.
This is part of the National Governments decision, because of poor outcomes with oral and written English.
