Workshops to Strengthen Disaster Risk Management in PNG

Disaster Risk Management Workshops have already been conducted in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Madang and Port Moresby.

The exact dates have yet to be confirmed for workshops that will be held in Mt Hagen and Simbu but will take place sometime next month.

These workshops aim to improve disaster management systems in a country that is prone to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, drought, cyclones and earthquakes among others.

UNDP Technical Specialist for Disaster Risk Management, Khusrav Sharifov, said, “By having systems in place, it will also help to provide efficient and effective responses to disasters, which in the long run will help save lives.”

Members of the Disaster Management Committees in each of the pilot provinces including representatives from selected districts and other partners such as community based organisations that provide on the ground support are participants at these workshops.

Province participants are to develop a draft Disaster Management Plan, Standard Operating Procedures and a DRM Capacity Assessment after the workshop.

Follow up tasks will be captured in an Action Plan, highlighting immediate, medium and longer term priority matters to be addressed.

If this approach is successful in these pilot provinces, there is a potential to eventually expand the project to other regions in the country.
