PORT MORESBY, July 10 – Volleyball at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby will play out over eight days of competition from July 11-18 and feature 10 teams in each of the men’s and women’s tournamen’s.
Wallis and Futuna actually topped Tahiti to win the past two men’s Pacific Games volleyball titles, including a 3-0 straight sets victory for its most recent success in Noumea in 2011.
Papua New Guinea also showed great form in New Caledonia to win bronze 3-1 against the hosts and will be keen for even better results on home turf.
Both Wallis and Futuna and Tahiti had survived five-set thrillers in their Noumea 2011 semifinals.
The 2011 Pacific Games women’s champion, Tahiti, was irrepressible in beating New Caledonia 3-0 to claim a well-deserved gold medal, while Samoa beat Fiji for bronze.
Tahiti did not lose a set in the entire 2011 tournament while New Caledonia had only lost one prior to its gold medal match defeat.
At Port Moresby 2015, there will be 76 games in total: the men’s and women’s competitions are each be divided into two pools in a round robin format, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to semifinals and then to gold and bronze medal matches.
All nine of American Samoa, Fiji, Guam, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna have entered men’s and women’s teams. The additional women’s team is Solomon Islands while the tenth men’s team is Tonga.
The first volleyball game of Port Moresby 2015 will be a men’s pool B clash between Fiji and Nauru at 09:00 at BSP Arena.
