Variarata Park is a 40 minute drive from Port Moresby on Sogeri Rd towards the Owen Stanley Range. You’ll need your own transport to get there.
The park is officially staffed by rangers and is the country’s first national park. In total, it covers 1000 hectares of forest.
From the look-out at 800m above sea-level, you’ll see breathtaking views of Port Moresby and the coastline.
Activities include bird-watching for Kingfishers and Raggiana Birds of Paradise, as well as bushwalking along a variety of trails; some 45 minutes and others three hours long.
