Roadblocks by NCD Police Keeping Roads Safe

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

It’s the eighth day of police operations in NCD, and so far there have been no reports of road accidents, as seen in previous years during the festive period.

Police are setting up road blocks at different sections of the city to minimise drink driving and the transportation of illegal goods, among other reasons.

NCD police are working day and night to reduce road crimes and accidents this festive season.

Each day at least four road blocks are set up at different parts of the city to keep unworthy vehicles off the road.

Surprisingly, there are fewer vehicles on the road this festive season.

Roads blocks are conducted by police in partnership with the National Road Safety Council.

So far, officers have confiscated the licences of drivers transporting alcohol, and have impounded unregistered vehicles.

Meanwhile NCD Metropolitan Superintended, Andy Bawa has warned all motorists to observe traffic rules.

He said most NCD residents have responded to the imposed alcohol ban positively and there is also a drop in the number of alcohol-related problems this week.

Bawa said police will be releasing a full report of the first week of the festive operations tomorrow.
