The Provincial Capital of West Sepik Province, Vanimo, has seen little development for the last 20 years. Apart from the major road upgrades in the Bewani-Wutung-Onei LLG and Vanimo Urban LLG.
In the last 10 years, the district’s other 3 LLGs are yet to be properly connected to Vanimo Town.
However, this will change after Vanimo-Green MP, Belden Namah, revealed a development plan for Vanimo that will see major developments in key areas in the next two years. Mr Namah said all schools, teacher’s houses and health clinics will be upgraded to permanent infrastructures and all roads to Vanimo town will be linked.
MP Namah said the entire Province needs a refocus and development of its rural infrastructures, like rural health clinics and schools which will be given top priority.
Other issues of border security and the recent smuggling of drugs by PNG citizens into Indonesia have been blamed on the close proximity of the Batas Shopping centre at the Wutung Border Post.
Mr Namah believes the shopping centre should have been built on the other side of the Tami River which acts as a natural border demarcation between Indonesia and PNG.
For now, road upgrades and sealing will be the main focus of the district which the MP said should be completed by the end of the year.
