Newly appointed Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, has been tasked to speed-up and oversee investigations into the January Hanuabada killings.
Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, said this is one of the priority areas the new police chief has been tasked with.
Mr O’Neill wants a complete report into the Hanuabada killings and see discipline and command in the force.
The Prime Minister made remarks yesterday that the police force has seen a breakdown in command. This has left no choice but for the government to appoint a new police commissioner.
Meanwhile, Mr O’Neill said the government is yet to receive a formal report from the police hierarchy over the Hanuabada incident. “We are all left in the dark about the incident (Hanuabada)”, O’Neill said.
Police investigations into the Hanuabada killings will see a 2nd Coronial inquest, as a bullet found in one of the deceased was never connected to any police firearm.
The Prime Minister is confident Mr Baki will re-direct the force as this role is not new to Mr Baki.
