PM Conveys Best Wishes to PNG Olympians to Rio

Prime Minster, Peter O’Neill, has conveyed his best wishes to the PNG Olympians as they prepare to compete at the Rio Olympic Games.

Prime Minister in his remarks said representing Papua New Guinea at the Olympic level is a tremendous honour and all athletes will carry the pride of the nation with them.

“Go for gold in Rio, but even if you don’t win a medal, so long as you do your best your country will be proud.

“You carry the goodwill of the nation with you, and are role models for our youth. It is a great honour you have, representing your country and we know that you will serve us proud. While at the Olympics you will be ambassadors for Papua New Guinea, wear our national colors with pride and showcase your talent and skills to the world.

“I urge all Papua New Guineans to get behind our team and gather in your homes and communities to watch our athletes compete.”

The Prime Minister also reaffirms the Government’s commitment to extend the highest level of support to the development of sports in the country.

“Our Government is committed to the development of our athletes, from the grassroots through to the elite level. We are encouraging our young people to get involved with sports at a district level from an early age. This is best for the physical growth of our young people, and encourages their social development. Through this process we will also identify and assist our future athletes who will compete for their provinces and the nation.”
