Papa-Lealea Primary School Embrace Wash Program

by Eric Haurupma – EM TV, Port Moresby

Papa-Lealea Primary School in Central province is one of four schools in the country that have been considered for the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) evaluation survey.

Officers from the Australian Development and Effectiveness conducted an evaluation today to monitor the school’s water sanitation and hygiene status.

The WASH program is an Australian government-funded project operating in 50 countries around the world.

In September 2014, Anglicare PNG, in conjunction with Water PNG and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), launched the WASH program in a number of schools in NCD. With K180,000 funding from Water PNG, Anglicare rolled out the program in Osobei Elementary, Christ the King Primary and Barakau Primary School.

This morning, officials from DFAT, through the Australian Development and Effectiveness office, carried out an evaluation in Papa-Lealea Primary School.

The WASH evaluation included assessments of rain water catchments or tanks, ventilated pit latrines, hand washing buckets and shower rooms.

Students were tasked to clean toilets and soap hands regularly with soap and water after going to the toilet. They also volunteer to fetch water in buckets and contributed 10 toea each to buy soap for students to use after the toilet.

The program was carried out through a WASH management plan assigning specific tasks for individual committee.

Meanwhile, after the project ended last month, the school continues to initiate this program.
