Manus Governor, Charlie Benjamin, says there is no safety guaranteed for refugees held in Manus.
The Manus Governor questioned Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato, today in parliament if proper procedures could be followed to dismantle the camps in Manus.
Governor Benjamin said, refugees were out causing problems in Manus.
The Manus Governor told Parliament that the Manus people are fed-up and frustrated with what refugees are doing outside the camp.
“Their lives are at risk following recent crimes caused by refugees who roam outside the detention centre,” said Governor Benjamin.
Minister responsible, Rimbink Pato, said the Chief Migration Officer will be flown to Manus next week to assess the camps. Pato says, steps taken by the Department and State agencies must comply with the Supreme Court ruling.
In the past three months refugees in Manus have caused a number of crimes, including public drinking, being in possession of marijuana, and homebrew equipment, and the alleged rape of a local woman, recently.
The five refugees involved in the crimes are out on bail awaiting further mention in the Manus District Court.
