Mother Delivers Baby on PMV Bus

by Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

A mother delivered her baby boy on a PMV bus yesterday morning, much to the shock of passengers, metres away from the Port Moresby General Hospital.

Josicca Simon, from Porgera in the Enga Province was on her way to the public hospital from Morata 1, when her baby arrived just as the bus stopped, outside the Paradise Private Hospital.

Both mother and baby are in a stable condition at the private hospital.

The baby boy is Josicca’s third child and weighs 3.65 kg.

Passengers were stunned, but immediately sought help from the nearby private hospital. Jossica had lost up to 400 mL of blood, before being taken in. Sister Helen Mokrom, a mid-wife from Paradise Hospital, rushed to the mother’s aid.

Sister Helen said this is the third baby she has come to the aid of mothers, at the same bus stop.

Jossica’s husband abandoned her, with their two other children; moving to Enga two months ago and she has since remarried.

She said that she was financially unable to look after her newborn and to her relief, Sr Eggie Makabe, a mid-wife at Paradise Private Hospital, has agreed to adopt the baby. Sr Eggie, also from Enga, is a mother to four girls, and is happy to have another addition, this time a boy, into her family.

Sister Helen says these incidents could not happen if mothers were more aware of the timings of their contractions.

The hospital will not charge any fees for services provided to Jossica and her baby.
