Madang Pioneers ‘Static Var Generator’, Increasing Power Generation

By Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

While the cities of Port Moresby and Lae continue to face power disruptions, the residents of Madang are welcoming the news of the installation of a new generator, to address electricity issues.

PNG Power recently commissioned a new generator that was installed at the Meiro Substation in Madang, in a bid to address power problems.

Known as the ‘Static Var Generator’ or STATCOM SVG, it increases power generation.

Power disruptions are an on-going issue, faced throughout the country.

Former Madang Governor and businessman, Sir Peter Barter and the Madang Chamber of Commerce executives were there to witness the commissioning.

PNG Power has already commissioned two generators, one for the East Taraka sub-station in Lae in 2011, and one for the Six Mile – Boroko sub-station in Port Moresby, last year.

The generator at Meiro sub-station is said to improve power generation for the Ramu grid.

This is the first of its kind in the country, and PNG Power is the first electricity utility in the Pacific region to adopt the STATCOM SVG Technology.
