More than 100 young children in Lae city have been part of the Lae Minkey Development Program, in the last four weeks.
The Minkey Hockey Program is targeting children between the ages of 6 years old and 13 years old, however many younger children have also shown interest.
Lae Hockey President, Harry Kaisa says the program is aimed at developing more young talents in the Lae Hockey Association.
It was a sunny Saturday morning in Lae city and young children have already gathered at the Lae hockey field.
For two hours, they were learning the proper skills and techniques of playing hockey, and the proper attires to wear when playing.
The six-week program has attracted a good interest from young kids, who are also children of families within the Lae hockey fraternity.
The hockey development program started about seven years ago.
Many of the players that came through the program have moved on to play in the senior teams and have represented Morobe and Papua New Guinea.
Lae Biscuit Company has come on board to support the program by purchasing much-needed hockey equipment.
The program not only looks at teaching young children about hockey, but also on healthy living.
The interest from young children has also lead to the idea of establishing a junior competition for them to participate in.
Young kids in Lae city are invited to come along on Saturdays, between 9am and 11am, to be part of the fun and games.
