The Kainantu district administrator Geoffrey Kokorime saidthe district administration is working to fix Kainantu’s water problem inthe next fourteen days.
He saysthe LLG elections inthe province have delayedthe release of funding for the water project.
Mr. Kokorime saidthey have been having problems in liaising withthe landowners to allowthe water service to continue.
They are also having difficulty in getting funds fromthe national government because ofthe disruption caused bythe LLG elections.
The source of Kainantu’s main water supply sits on a customary land and it isn’t an easy task to come to a compromise withthe landowners in terms of benefits and protection of state assets.
Like many ther urban areas, water remainsthe major necessity; and with irregular water flow, most ofthe government’services and businesses have been halted.
More people residing within Kainantu Town have been put at risk of waterborne diseases.
The District Administrator saidthe water will be restored if only funds are released bythe national government and a compromise reached withthe landowners, but that might still be a long way off.
