Families Face New Round of Evictions in Lae

by Scot Waide – EM TV, Lae

Four families in Lae City are being threatened with a new round of evictions, after a court ruling this morning.

The National Housing Corporation is working on getting the families evicted from houses they have lived in for more than 20 years.

This is the third time an eviction has been attempted on John Bangui and his family, who have been living in a 4th street property in Lae City.

Today after a court decision, which they claim was not fair; orders were issued by the court for them to leave the property. But by this afternoon, Bangui and his family were still waiting.

“This house belongs to the National Airports Corporation, not NHC. The transfer of titles has not been done. This is wrong. “

At another property along Coronation Drive, another family is being threatened with eviction. The tenants were interviewed and later asked not to appear on EMTV because they were taking the matter to the national court, tomorrow.

There is still confusion about the ownership of the properties. The tenants argue that the properties are owned not by the National Housing Corporation but by the National Airports Corporation.

For John Bangui, he paid the NHC K78, 000 as the purchase price. To date, he has not received a receipt for that payment.
