The National Statistical Office ended its Southern Region leg ofthe Electronic Identification Workshop in Port Moresby.
It is part of a nationwide awareness drive to informthe people aboutthe government’s ambition to have a uniflied population data base system usingthe E-ID Card.
The workshop was well attended by a cross section of individuals.
Many ofthem were keen to know more aboutthe National Identification card system or E-ID.
E-ID is a smart card containing all basic information of an individual.
The National Government has approverd 213 million kina for the development ofthe identity card by Huawei Technologies for 2013 to 2016.
Legislation allows it to be implemented throughoutthe country.
The E-ID Card will ensure a uniflied population data base system which has been lacking for the past 37 years.
The prevention of identitytheft is one ofthe many benefits associated withthe card.
The general consensus has been positive, butthe implementing agency is aware ofthe challengesthere is to implementingthe project.
Language Berriers and geographical settings in many parts ofthe country are major hindrances.
NCD will beginthe first phase ofthe roll out program in August next year with ther centers to follow.
