Artists Present K10,000 Cheque to Help Earthquake-affected Communities

By Stacy Yalo – EMTV News, Port Moresby

A cheque of K10,000 was presented to Hela’s Deputy Administrator, Eddie Yuwi in Port Moresby. The cheque presentation was made by PNG artists.

The musicians plus a visual artist performed at The Cosmopolitan Club last Thursday, to raise funds for Hela & Southern Highlands provinces. The artists said it was a successful night and they are happy to host another concert in the future for disaster relief purposes.

Of the K30,000 the artists raised on Saturday, the money will be split into 3 areas in Hela and the Southern Highlands province. K10,000 was given to Hela Province to purchase immediate supplies.

The remaining K20,000 will be split between the Mendi command centre and Pimaga Care Centre in Kutubu. The artists will be travelling into the disaster areas in the Southern Highlands & Hela provinces today.

Event Organiser, McSteve Polly, said although they had targeted K50,000 for that night, K19,800 was collected from ticket sales alone and the sponsors came in to bring the amount to K30,000. The artists said the night was successful and a future concert to raise funds for disaster purposes will be considered.

The only visual artist, who painted on stage while the concert was on, said it was an honour for him to be a part of the event. Jeffery Feeger who painted an image of an old woman in Hela hugging Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill during his visit to the province soon after the disaster. The painting will be auctioned at a corporate dinner that will be organised and announced at a later date.
