The vast landmass of the Kairuku Hiri District in Central province is hampering the delivery of services, says local MP, Peter Isoaimo.
Isoaimo said the district is stretched and the electoral boundary needs to be separated by the Electoral Commission.
He made these points while addressing Koiari landowners yesterday over development matters. Isoaimo believes the separation of Kairuku from Hiri will help the district focus more in maximising the outcomes of development plans, given the K10 million DSIP annually.
“We must appreciate whatever funds we are allocated with, however if the district is separated, services will reach people quicker than today,” Isoaimo said.
For Kairuku Hiri, road infrastructure is the major development agenda in linking the people to the basic services of health and education.
Isoaimo’s call was supported by Trade Minister, Richard Maru, stating that the Electoral Commission should consider this concern.
“I believe separating the district into two is the way forward given the large land mass,” said Minister Maru.
Similar concerns have been raised by MPs in West New Britain, East Sepik, and the Governors of Hela, Enga and Western provinces.
