Many teachers in Papua New Guinea are forced to find their own accommodation because the education department is not tasked to build teachers houses. While this is a big problem for teachers, it also threatens the quality of education in the country.
Gordons Secondary School Principal, Sam Lora said, many teachers in the Nation’s Capital are living in squatter settlements. Lora said the circumstances faced by a teacher, affects the teacher’s performance and in turn, affects his/her students.
Today the Gordons Secondary School officially opened two new teachers’ houses.
The houses, built from the Moresby North-East Electorate funds, under the leadership of MP Labi Amaiu, cost K600, 000 in total. Mr Amaiu said under his leadership, human development is the key investment of his electorate.
The MP said his office is supporting the government’s move to prioritise education and the houses are to enhance the quality of teacher to student education.
The two new houses were opened and commissioned by the MP and witnessed by teachers and students of the school.
